Highlighting green building initiatives and achievements
USGBC's U.S. Local Market Leadership Awards celebrate excellence from projects, people, and partners who are working in their local community to align the built environment with critical imperatives including decarbonization, ecosystem conservation and restoration, equity, health, and resilience. The awards promote and recognize excellence in sustainable design, environmental stewardship and community impact by highlighting the green building initiatives and achievements of local projects, businesses and individual leaders.
- The following markets are participating in the 2024 U.S. Local Market Leadership Awards program, grouped by application deadline:
- Group 1 (August 26 Nomination Deadline): Alabama, Colorado, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, Tennessee
- Group 2 (October 10 Nomination Deadline): Arkansas, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois (project awards only), Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Texas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, West Virginia
- The nomination deadline in Florida has been extended to Oct. 21
- Nominees for Project, People or Partner awards must be in one of the above markets as defined by USGBC. Projects qualify based on location, even if the nominator is not in that market.
- Project award nominees must have been certified under LEED or another GBCI program in the last two years (since Jan. 1, 2022).
- Nominees who have won another USGBC award in the last three years are not eligible. For Project Awards, this is limited to a specific building project. Project teams who have won awards within the last three years for a different project are welcome to submit new projects. Previous Project Award Winners who have made new improvements to the project or performance, or who have achieved additional LEED certifications or recertifications are eligible after three years.
- All nominees give consent for USGBC to promote their nomination if it is chosen as a winner. The information provided in the nomination form can be used in award-related promotions, including listing in the usgbc.org directory, social media and other media.
- All Project Award Nominees must create/update their USGBC project profile on usgbc.org with a description and photos. Learn how to update your project profile.
- Project award applications in all markets have an application fee of $50. The fee may be paid by credit card at the time of application or you may request to be invoiced. You may request to have the application fee waived if you work for a government or nonprofit organization or if you cannot pay due to economic hardship. Contact us with any inquiries about waiving the project award application fee.
- There is no fee to nominate people or organizations for awards.
USGBC Local Market Leadership Awards categories
四色AV Local Market Leadership Awards have two categories: Project Awards and Community Impact Awards for people and partners.
Buildings, neighborhoods, communities, and other built projects are eligible nominees for Project Awards.
- Design + Construction Award
For a design and construction project certified in the last two years which demonstrates market leadership towards a near zero carbon reality that is equitable, resilient, and promotes the wise, safe use of all resources. - Operations + Maintenance Award
For an existing building certified or recertified in the last two years which demonstrates market leadership towards a near zero carbon reality that is equitable, resilient, and promotes the wise, safe use of all resources. - Iconic Building Award
For a project certified in the last two years that is significant or symbolic of the community, city, or region in which it is located, symbolizing progress, innovation, and cultural identity. - Decarbonization Award
For a project certified in the last two years which demonstrates significant reductions in operational and embodied carbon, refrigerants, and transportation emissions. - Quality of Life Award
For a project certified in the last two years that has made significant efforts in improving health, wellbeing, resilience, and equity for building occupants and their communities, making spaces not just environmentally friendly but also people-friendly. - Ecological Conservation and Restoration Award
For a project certified in the last two years which excelled in strategies that limit environmental degradation and contribute to the restoration of ecosystems, ensuring that our built environment exists harmoniously with nature. - Rise to the Challenge Award
For a project or project team that overcame significant obstacles to provide meaningful and sustainable performance outcomes in a single building or at scale through a portfolio of buildings. Challenges may include implementing programs for a large-scale complex or surmounting significant limitations (cost or other) while demonstrating leadership in green building design/operations. Must be an existing building.
Projects are reviewed by an esteemed panel of judges who represent leaders and stakeholders in the USGBC community with a variety of technical, market, and sector perspectives and expertise. Projects are scored on a 50-point scale based on the following criteria:
- Application Quality (up to 10 points): The project award application is complete and thorough, providing direct insight into the project and demonstrating its excellence in meeting the specific award judging criteria and intent of the award category in which it applied.
- Certification achievement (Up to 10 points): Calculated based on the project's LEED certification version and level, recertification, and other GBCI certifications awarded.
- Goals (Up to 5 points): The project has a clearly defined project scope and significant goals that demonstrate a sustainable leadership approach.
- Strategies (Up to 5 points): The project demonstrates excellence through strategies that address decarbonization, quality of life, ecological conservation, and restoration.
- Process & Synergies (Up to 5 points): The project demonstrates a collaborative team approach that supports high-performance, cost-effective, and cross-functional project outcomes through an early analysis and planning of the interrelationships among systems.
- Performance (Up to 5 points): The project demonstrates high performance based on indicators and data that is aligned from design and construction to operations and maintenance through performance monitoring.
- Market significance (Up to 5 points): The project is unique, important or demonstrates significance that will advance the adoption of green practices in a specific location, market, sector or building use type.
- Lessons Learned (Up to 5 points): Project clearly articulates and shares valuable lessons learned within a specific location, market, sector or building use type that can inform future projects.
The Project information on the nomination form mirrors this judging criterion. Based on the Project Award categories above, judges select which award will be given to each project based on the information in their nomination form. We encourage nominators to consider this list of potential award types when crafting their nomination information.
Community Impact Awards for People and Partners
Individual people and organizational partners who support USGBC's mission by advancing sustainability, resiliency, equity, health, and wellbeing in the local community are eligible for the Community Impact Awards. There is no fee to nominate a person or partner for a Community Impact Award.

or with an overview of the awards program and tips for applying.
- Q: I see the application requires that I complete my USGBC project profile. My project is LEED-certified, but I cannot find a profile in the project directory to update. What should I do?
- A: If your LEED-certified project does not have a profile in the project directory, please check LEED Online to see if the project has been marked as "Confidential." Confidential projects will not show in the directory. To change your project from Confidential to Public, you will need the LEED Admin to change the project's status in LEED Online, or you can .
- Q: My project is not LEED-certified but has earned certification under another GBCI program, such as SITES or TRUE. Can I still apply?
- A: Projects that have been certified under any GBCI program are welcome to apply, and their certification level will count towards points earned on our judges' rubric. If you have certified under another GBCI program but not LEED, you may share another URL in the application field that asks for your LEED project profile. Contact us if you run into issues.
